Chriselle Lim on Channeling Purpose and Passion into Multiple Brands, with Lindsay Pinchuk on Dear FoundHer...

Chriselle Lim, creator and founder of Phlur and Bümo, was interviewed by Lindsay Pinchuk of Dear FoundHer… on channeling her purpose and passion into establishing multiple highly successful brands.

Named in Glossy’s 50 Trendsetters of 2022, and Create & Cultivate 100 List of 2020, Chriselle Lim is one of the most sought after digital creators garnering over 4M followers across Instagram and TikTok and over 700K subscribers on YouTube. She is the Owner and Creative Director of cult-favorite perfume, Phlur, selected as one of the best new fragrances of 2022 by Forbes, a finalist for the 2023 Fragrance Foundation Awards, and described by Glamour as “the brand that broke the internet.” With a waitlist of over 200,000 people, Chriselle has established the brand to what it is today.

Additionally, she is also a Co-Founder of Bümo, which brings licensed education-based childcare to the workplace. As a go-getter and savvy businesswoman, Chriselle saw a missing piece in the support system and became passionate to find a solution for millennial parents, specifically working mothers.

Chriselle started off her fashion career as a wardrobe stylist logging years of editorial shoots with prominent fashion books and celebrities. In December 2011, she founded The Chriselle Factor to chronicle her daily musings and personal style. Chriselle launched her YouTube channel in 2008 to empower women all over the world to discover their true beauty and confidence. In 2019, Mattel created a Barbie styled by Chriselle which sold out in the first 3 hours of launch. She has also partnered with luxury brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Fendi, as well as mass market labels from Revlon to Veuve Clicquot.

Safe to say, she has no plan of slowing down. Chriselle continues to encourage, educate, and inspire all women across the globe through her financial insight, personal style, runway trends, beauty secrets, and fashion tips and tricks. Recently included in Gotham’s top 10 Fun and Inspiring Fashion Influencers on TikTok, she is now one of the most influential tastemakers on the web, and if her addictive daily musings are any indication, the best is yet to come.

In this episode of Dear FoundHer…, Chriselle discusses how she went about channeling her purpose and passion into multiple brands with millions of followers, while navigating the challenges that come with being a single mother.

“The best businesses are born when it is something that you personally need, and you find out that other people around you need it as well,” explains Chriselle Lim, highly accomplished serial entrepreneur.

Podcast Quotes:

  • “I am a firm believer that one thing will always lead you to the next thing even if that is not the official thing that you're supposed to land on. But everything is always a stepping stone to the next thing.” (10:18-10:29 | Chriselle)

  • “I do have a very sufficient team, which allows me to stay creative. And that's something that I learned along the way, because for a long time, since I've been doing this for 15 years, I kind of had to play a lot of different roles. But I realized the more that I am in the day to day business and the negotiations and the money part, it takes away from my strength, which is creativity.” (15:53-16:17 | Chriselle)

  • “The best businesses are born when it is something that you personally need, and you find out that other people around you need it as well.” (19:13-19:21 | Chriselle)

  • “We kind of flipped the fragrance industry upside down, because they're like, ‘how do you guys have a 200,000 person waitlist for a fragrance that no one knows how it smells?’.” (37:19-37:29 | Chriselle)

  • “You don't even have to talk about the product 99.9% of the time, but if you have a good story and you're passionate about it, it will sell itself.” (40:18-40:27 | Lindsay)

  • “Every single business that I have, I have a very, very strong partner and they usually are the opposite of what I am. And so that is kind of my secret sauce, is having a partner that makes up for my weaknesses.” (44:44-44:59 | Chriselle)

  • “Really understand what your passion is and really understand what you're trying to build. Because if it's just for money, and when times get hard, it's easy to burn out quickly. But if it's something that you absolutely love, and you're so passionate about, and during hard times, which there will be many hard times, you will keep going because of your passion and your desire to see this thing come to life.” (46:38-47:09 | Chriselle)

  • “Wear the many hats you need to wear as a founder and then know your limits. Understand what you're good at. When you're strategic with your time and who does what, you actually can manage your own time.” (49:51-50:01 | Lindsay)
